About us

We are bobandalf, designers of bold articles. Our partnership is key in the creation of our practice - a combination of skills and friendship. A mix of backgrounds in graphic design, 3D design, curation and arts management.

We believe in circular design by reusing paper and sustainable materials in the creation of our contemporary homeware and collectable design. We find new and unexpected variation of form with our component parts.

What makes us tick?...

A walk, a talk, a visit, a day out can trigger ideas and responses. Ideas and concepts are paramount but at times the material can lead the shape of the final form.

So, what can trigger us? a respect for both the urban and rural environment; appreciation of Scandinavian and mid-century modern design, art, photography, fashion and architecture; an admiration for creative practitioners pushing boundaries with new materials and sustainable approaches to making.

We’ve looked back to move forward.

bobandalf is a nod to our grandfathers (both carpenters), in recognition of their hand-making skills and wisdom.

All objects by bobandalf are made by hand.

All our work is made by hand in our studio in Hitchin and London. We endeavour to maintain a sense of spontaneity and freshness combined with good workmanship.

We value the qualities of the making process and appreciate the imprint of the hand.

We believe in sustainable making.

We try to be as environmentally conscious as possible.

We predominantly recycle, repurpose and reuse household waste paper to create our work. We keep all of our paper and card ready tor recycling.

Our materials are carefully considered - we use an eco-resin which is a water-based composite of gypsum and resin. As it is water-based, not solvent-based, it is widely recognised as eco-friendly. We use responsibly sourced wood and in particular birch ply due to its minimal disruption of biodiversity when felled. We also use cork due to its ability to protect the environment through gas absorption during the natural regeneration process following stripping. Most of our packaging is plastic free or bio-degradable.

We get a thrill out of making new objects from what is generally seen as waste.
